Rioja

At Altos de Corral, we do not pause in our efforts to maintain the quality that was inherited at the very highest level, staying true to the centuries-old winegrowing tradition of our winery. It is our duty, as well as our privilege, to conserve the immense potential that is found in the roots of our vineyard. Our wines offer a taste of that unbreakable bond between man and earth.

TERROIR

It is true that vines only like to grow in beautiful places. As if from the hand of an invisible sculptor, the climatic and orographic conditions and picturesque surroundings of our estate cut a unique figure in the heart of La Rioja, from which it is possible our duty and pleasure to distil the truest essence of the surrounding countryside.

ALTITUDE

Let us move away from the valleys to get a little closer to the sky.
Our estate is located in the municipality of Navarrete (Rioja Alta), at an altitude of 600 m, the limit for tending of vines in the area. To the north, old Sonsierra marks the recolonisation of wine by the Leyre monks after the Arab invasion, and nearby to the north is the prison where the bishop Acuña purged harsh letters regarding the punishment of the royalists. To the east lies the tomb of Cersar Borgia. To the east also lies Clavijo, another contributor to La Rioja, from Castile. To the east is the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage route that favours, as well as the penitent, a culture that values wine. To the south lie the mountains of Moncalvillo.

CLIMATE

The confluence of Atlantic, continental, and Mediterranean climates creates a unique microclimate around Altos de Corral, sheltered by the Sierra de Moncalvillo and the Sierra de Cantabria. The great wines of the world are produced on the climatic knife edge that sometimes provides us with unsatisfactory wine but which, in other seasons, culminates in superb conditions. This situation is the fruit of uncertainty, far removed from the everyday.

VARIETY

We grow the tempranillo variety, a type that is native to La Rioja. This variety is held to be the most excellent and representative of the Spanish red grapes. It produces small fruits with loose clusters with a dark violet colour, almost black, from which extremely fragrant wines can be made.
Wines made from tempranillo grapes are suitable for large-scale maturation, which is where the tempranillo variety is strongest.

GROUND

The ten hectares encompassed by the Altos de Corral estate house earth that is both clayey and chalky in the north, and alluvial in the south. A layer of rounded stones cover the entirety of the estate, making it a truly difficult task for the vines to find the substrate they need to exist.

WISDOM

The close attention to each stage of each process is what makes a wine excellent. We know how to do things in Altos de Corral.
